We are so proud of the work of our youth! They were so excited to present them to Joe!

The art is up! Joe hung them himself!! I am totally loving how it brightens our office! We are printing gallery style cards with the titles of the pieces and the artists’ names to go alongside them.

Thank you Boys and Girls Club of Southern Illinois!! (I’ve claimed dibs on the one with the Goddess Justitia!)

Women in History:
1955: Claudette Colvin
On March 2, 1955, Claudette Colvin, a 15 year old African American, was arrested after refusing to give up her seat to a white woman on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Colvin's case occurred months before the iconic Rosa Parks incident, and historians point out that her efforts were not highlighted in the press as notably as Parks' because Colvin was a young teenager and pregnant. Colvin used the city buses to get to and from school, where she was part of the NAACP youth program. She was one of 3 plaintiffs listed in the pivotal Bowder v. Gayle case, which officially ruled that Alabama's segregation policies on city buses were considered unconstitutional. The ruling was appealed, sending the case to the US Supreme Court in November 1956. The court upheld the original ruling, forcing the city and state to revise their policies. Due to her involvement in the case, Colvin had to relocate to New York City to find work, as local employers thought negatively of her actions. Colvin lived and worked in New York for over 3 decades, and her story was rarely told in the aftermath of the civil rights movement.

The Alabama teenager didn’t budge when she was told to vacate her seat for a white woman and joined a lawsuit that brought an end to her city's segregated bus laws, but she received little recognition at the time for her efforts. ... See more
